Scattered Castles is my dream: I’m just one guy. No investors. No board of directors. No outside financing. No crowd-sourcing. No corporate interests. This isn’t an old family recipe. It’s about quality, passion, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of great bourbon. Every detail, from grain to glencairn, was made with purpose.
Scattered Castles bourbon and rye whiskeys are never rushed. Temperature swings, warehouse airflow, and natural evaporation (the “angel’s share”) all shape the final whiskey. However, I don’t subscribe to the thought that older is always better. If it sits too long, it becomes too oaky, and that flavor will overpower all the complexity and nuance of great whiskey. Likewise, over-toasting the barrel (Level 4 char or more) doesn’t automatically make it better, either. In fact, over-charring the barrel can burn off a lot of the natural sugars in the wood, imparting a bitter flavor to the whiskey.
Scattered Castles Bourbon is not produced for scale. The goal isn’t volume. It’s bottled in very limited quantities because the goal is to create something genuinely exceptional. Each release is rare, and reflects a specific point in time, a specific blend of barrels, and a specific philosophy: quality over everything. Scattered Castles is a reflection of my journey and I hope you enjoy it.
